From a certain point onward, there is no turning back. That is the point that must be reached.” -F. Kafka

Washington Capitals Training Camp 2008 is in full swing, with Coach Bruce presiding over the three team “Gaetan Duchesne Cup” tournament (which, yes, apparently will have a trophy), and the autumn season has officially begun. From the rolling hills of the sparkling-new strip mall that is Clarendon Boulevard to the glittering skyscrapers of Midtown Manhattan, a brisk breeze met Monday morning commuters, providing a more appropriate outside climate for the journey begun at Kettler on Saturday.

One that will hopefully conclude with a Capitals team engraving on a storied chalice.

The journey really began in the spring of 2004 (a prequel, if you will) when the “fire sale,” featuring the diaspora of well-compensated veterans Jagr, Lang, Bondra, and Gonchar, brought in prospects that are now Capitals regulars: Shaone Morrisonn, Brooks Laich, Tomas Fleischmann. Ever since, General Manager McPhee and Director of Amateur Scouting Ross Mahoney have methodically assembled a sleeping giant, now awakening.

All that remains is for this Capitals team, the 23 men to break camp, to perform at the level that the organization expects them to perform.

There is no more waiting. There is no more rebuilding. There are no more excuses. This is the squad that the fans were promised almost five years ago, that will stake claim to a playoff spot and, then, strive toward ultimate victory.

There is now no turning back.
