As the Sunday evening of one final summer week before the start of Capitals rookie camp winds down, I have one further thought on the upcoming retirement of Mike Gartner’s #11. One to make that historic night truly grand.
Let’s go throwback for that game on December 28th.
Heck, even the night’s opponent, the Maple Leafs, should wear sweaters like these:
Bold reds and blues are easily distinguishable. No need for a road white.
(Incidentally, my deliberate posting above of a photo of the “Wild Thing” aside, this represents the style of jersey worn by Coach Boudreau during his multiple cups of coffee with the Leafs.)
The throwback sweaters would be a powerful symbol of the continuity of the franchise, one proud of its history — which would be especially worthwhile during a game that many Canadian hockey fans will be watching on LEAFS TV.
A franchise that shouldn’t be thought of as becoming relevant only since Alex Ovechkin began his NHL career.
It’s an idea so brilliant, it can’t possibly become reality.

Totally brilliant and smart idea. That is why it will not happen. But wouldn’t it be awesome.

Old school sweaters in game? I think that would be awesome.
Commercially though, I’m generally opposed to mixing old and new. Stitching a current skater’s name on the back of a vintage sweater (either original or repro) is nothing short base sacrilege. It’s just an excuse for newbie and fair-weather fans to put down $300 and act like a bunch of charlatans.
